Biographical Statement: I am a graduate MSW student online through Ohio State (4.0 GPA) and a dedicated advocate with a background in education, child welfare, and community engagement. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Brigham Young University (Magna Cum Laude, 4.0 GPA) and was previously awarded a Presidential Scholarship at Boston University.
I currently serve as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Supervisor, advocate, and program developer with CASA of Marathon County, where I helped launch the Fostering Futures initiative and supervise volunteer advocates supporting youth in foster care. I am also an active member of Impact100 and have contributed to grantmaking, DEI efforts, and community engagement.
I was honored to receive the Erika, Andra, and Inara Brubaker Endowed Scholarship for Academic Excellence in Domestic Violence and Child Welfare, recognizing my commitment to advancing equitable outcomes for vulnerable populations.

Platform Statement: I am committed to growing as an advocate and leader within the social work profession, particularly by deepening my understanding of the issues impacting social workers and the communities we serve across Wisconsin. As policies at the federal level continue to shift, I believe it is critical that we, as social workers, remain grounded in our Code of Ethics—actively advocating for the dignity and worth of every person and advancing social justice.
As an MSW Student Representative, I hope to both learn from and contribute to NASW-WI by strengthening connections among students and early-career social workers and ensuring their voices are heard in meaningful ways. I am especially passionate about advocating for children in the foster care system and supporting the professionals who serve them.
I would be honored to engage in this work, expand my macro advocacy skills, and contribute to a strong, values-driven social work community.

Biographical Statement: I am a full-time Master of Social Work student at Louisiana State University, currently interning as a school social worker at DeForest Area High School. During my generalist internship with the National Association of Social Workers Wisconsin Chapter, I served as a social policy and legislative intern, researching legislation, presenting to committees, attending public hearings, and engaging with legislators, while also supporting the annual NASW-WI conference. I am an Air Force veteran and was honored to receive the John L. Levitow Award, the highest distinction in Airman Leadership School. I was recently inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, which recognizes the top 10% of graduate students, and I currently serve on the Policy Institute Committee and as a board member of the Wisconsin Women’s Network. I am passionate about public policy and committed to advocacy, empathy, and advancing meaningful, macro-level changes.

Platform Statement: I am committed to advancing the mission of the National Association of Social Workers Wisconsin Chapter through advocacy, collaboration, and meaningful community engagement. During my time as a policy and legislative intern with NASW-WI, I saw firsthand the dedication and passion of both staff and members, which strengthened my belief in the power of collective action, transparency, and trust. I bring strong policy knowledge, communication skills, and a leadership style grounded in empathy and accountability. As an online MSW student, full-time intern, mother, Air Force veteran, and advocate, I offer a unique perspective. I am dedicated to creating spaces where all voices are heard and valued while working toward lasting, equitable change.

Biographical Statement:
I obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in Community Education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2007. I obtained my Master of Social Work from Capella University in 2021. I recently passed the ASWB Masters level exam and was granted an Advanced Practice Social Worker license in early April 2023.  In the past 15 years I have worked as a Case Manager, Kinship and FISS Assessor, Disability Specialist, Program Manager and Eating Disorder Technician. My volunteer experience includes Big Clean Milwaukee, House of Peace and Sojourner Family Peace Center. I donate to Goodwill, Repairers of the Breach and Hunger Task Force.

Position Statement:
I would like to serve on the National Association of Social Workers Wisconsin Board of Directors because I want to provide a meaningful contribution to current and future social workers in addition to my community. I also want to continue to develop my professional skills by providing community service to further promote the values of the social work profession. I am currently on the Legislative Social Policy and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committees. Since being on these committees, I have gained the experience of how the NASW works to promote decreasing oppression on all social work levels. All of this along with my innate social work passion is what sparked my interested in becoming a board member.

WEST CENTRAL/NORTHCENTRAL/NORTHEAST BRANCH REPRESENTATIVE

Valarie Wielhouwer, DSW, APSW

Valarie

Biographical Statement:
As a Human Services Director with more than 19 years of cumulative social work experience across Wisconsin county human services and prior service in the United States Air Force, I oversee programs related to child welfare, youth justice, adult protective services, and behavioral health coordination. My professional career has focused on case management, child protection, family advocacy, and public service organizations. I have been a member of NASW since 2012 and bring the perspective of a non-clinical Advanced Practice Social Worker working primarily in public-sector and community-based services. My experience includes leadership in multidisciplinary teams, emergency response coordination, program oversight, and collaboration with courts, schools, law enforcement, and community stakeholders. I hold a Doctor of Social Work degree from Capella University, a Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and have received military honors including the Air Force Commendation Medal and Air Force Achievement Medal.

Platform Statement:
As a Human Services Director and long-time social worker, I am honored to be considered for a board position with the Wisconsin Chapter of NASW. My career began in child welfare in rural Wisconsin and has included service in military family advocacy, family maltreatment, and county human services leadership. These experiences strengthened my commitment to serving vulnerable children, youth, families, older adults, and individuals impacted by mental health, disability, poverty, and substance use challenges. I bring a non-clinical, rural practice perspective to NASW and strongly believe the profession must continue to support and elevate social workers across all practice settings—not only clinical roles. I am passionate about workforce development, mentorship, and encouraging the next generation of social workers to pursue licensure and leadership opportunities. I would be honored to advocate for practical, community-based social work across Wisconsin.
