The summer of 2026 has been one of volatile weather across the state of Wisconsin. My hope is that any necessary clean-up has been completed, that everyone’s power, if lost, has been restored and you all remain safe.

At the end of August, the state of Wisconsin was notified that it will be receiving up to nearly $313 million. of the $17 billion in the settlement with Meta, which will implement sweeping child-safety reforms on Instagram and Facebook. This is one of the largest court settlements in American history. We thank the efforts of Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, who noted last week, “This is a monumental step in changing the role of social media in kids’ lives for the better.” The settlement requires Meta to implement a series of safety features on Instagram and Facebook which are noted in the statement from the Attorney General’s office, press-release-meta-settlement.pdf.

On August 4th, former NASW-WI Executive Director Marc Herstand received a Citation from State Representative Lisa Subek and State Senator Dianne Hesselbein for his 33 years of service to NASW-WI and our state. In her social media post, Rep. Subek wrote, " Over those 33 years, Marc fought relentlessly for social workers and the communities they served. I am grateful to have worked side-by-side with Marc to protect kids from the dangers of conversion therapy, expand access to school mental health programs, and strengthen social services so that every Wisconsinite has the chance to get ahead." Starting this week, Wisconsin will enforce the Trump administration's eligibility rules for FoodShare and Medicaid.  FoodShare, or SNAP, is federally funded and has been providing food supply assistance to communities in Wisconsin. The “big beautiful” bill will restrict government funding for these services to U.S. citizens only. This will exclude all non-citizens, including refugees and immigrants, from eligibility for assistance. Medicaid eligibility will be cut in Wisconsin starting October 1st. Although it has been a very challenging time for many of us in the social work community, it is also important to reflect on the core values laid out in our code of ethics—those of service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence—and celebrate how these have helped shaped and strengthened our country. Please keep these positive notions in mind.
