Social Work Licensure Compact Update

The Social Work Licensure Compact has passed both the Wisconsin State Assembly and State Senate. Next Governor Tony Evers will sign the bill. The Governor’s signature allows the state of Wisconsin to formally join the Compact Commission. The Compact Commission is the governing body for the Social Work Compact. The Social Work Section will decide who the representative will be to the Compact Commission. We do not yet know when the Compact Commission will complete creating the regulations governing the Social Work Compact. Wisconsin's Department of Safety and Professional Services will provide information on when social workers can obtain a Social Work Compact license.  This is unlikely to take place until at least the end of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027.

The Social Work Licensure Compact will ensure continuity of care for clients who move out of state, either temporarily or permanently. It will also greatly shorten and simplify the process for social workers moving to Wisconsin to obtain a Wisconsin social work credential.
