Supervision

Pre-certification or pre-licensure social work practice must include supervision by a qualified, competent supervisor, averaging at least one hour of face-to-face individual or group supervision per week. Supervisors are ethically and legally required for the supervisee.
If supervision is a group session, there can only be six supervisees per supervisor.
A period of supervised practice of social work shall include, but not be limited to, practice in each of the following activities:
1. Evaluation and assessment of difficulties in the psychosocial functioning of a group or an individual
2. Developing plans or policies to alleviate those difficulties.
3. Intervention, which may include psychosocial evaluation and counseling of individuals, families, and groups; advocacy; referral to community resources; and facilitation of organizational change to meet social needs.
By the end of the supervised practice period, the candidate must demonstrate to their supervisor that they can competently perform all required social work skills and activities
For clinical social worker license applications submitted after November 1, 2002, supervision may be provided by any of the following qualified individuals:
1. An individual licensed as a clinical social worker who has received a doctorate degree in social work.
2. An individual licensed as a clinical social worker who has engaged in the equivalent of 5 years of full-time clinical social work.
3. A psychiatrist or a psychologist.
4. An individual licensed as a clinical social worker who has received a master’s degree in social work.
5. An individual, other than an individual specified in par. (a), (b) or (c), who is approved in advance by the social worker section.
For independent social worker license applications submitted after November 1, 2002, supervision may be provided by any of the following qualified individuals:
1. A licensed clinical social worker with a master’s or doctorate degree in social work.
2. A certified independent social worker with a master’s or doctorate degree in social work.
3. An individual, other than an individual specified in par. (a) or (b) who is approved in advance by the social worker section.
