Social workers play a vital role in addressing children’s social and emotional reactions to trauma.
We can facilitate trauma-informed, antiracist interventions in our work with children and with
adults, to ensure we are building safe environments essential for healthy development. This
presentation will illustrate the need for an intersectional approach to social and emotional
teaching that actively addresses racism and trauma. It will introduce elements of The Body’s
Story, a play-based classroom intervention developed by the presenter, that centers somatic
awareness in teachings of emotions and integrates play and storytelling with a goal of enhancing
internal and external resilience.

Statement of Rationale:
The management of ethics, boundaries and confidentiality is especially challenging for human service professionals who provide services in the client’s living environment including the client’s home, residential programs, emergency shelters, transitional living centers, skilled care facilities, assisted and supported living centers, and Hospice facilities. This workshop will address the unique issues encountered during the provision of these in-home services and will provide a framework for ethical decision-making.

This course examines how one’s culture impacts decision making in various treatment settings. Providers are constantly faced with ethical choices resulting in ambiguous outcomes and difficult decisions that may be morally confusing. Understanding cultural concepts enables providers to bridge the difference between themselves and diverse populations. Participants will acquire a better understanding of the ethical decision-making process when cross-cultural conflicts occur while addressing implications of unconscious biases.  The workshop will address these issues through a combination of interactive dialogue, focused discussion, and applied-practice exercises.

Exploring difficult crucial conversations; you will build skills in the 5 Essentials to Navigating Difficult Conversations with peers and gain the ability to hold colleagues accountable when needed. Communication styles and mitigation of risk is examined through personal and professional review of workplace culture. This workshop focuses on appropriate ethics and boundaries in client-social worker, therapist, counselor and peer-to-peer relationships.  Use of workbook activities, case scenarios and personal reflection will foster understanding of ethical, reflective practice with clients, agency and colleague ethical challenges in the workplace, and building skills in communication, and cooperative confrontation. We will examine how appreciation in the workplace can relieve ethical dilemmas and improve decision making. You won’t learn this content anywhere else!
